My Scars Tell My Story

by Jocelyn on February 19, 2012

You often read about pregnant women and how they are warriors for what their bodies go through during the growth of their child. They have scars to show for the amazing and beautiful life that they create.

What about those that have these scars for no reason at all, other than weight gain or loss and growth spurts. I’m one of those cases. Being an obsessive compulsive binge eater put my body through constant hell and no matter how much body butter I used…I paid the price at a young age.

This is me.

For many years I was ashamed of these scars. I did my best to not show the world. Always wore a one piece bathing suit, wouldn’t show old boyfriends my stomach, and always made sure to wear long shirts over my jeans to ensure my belly would not show. Recently, I have had a change in heart though. What if I decide to look at my body like pregnant woman do. What if I decide to say that I’m a warrior and my body has endured the pain that I put it through? The scars don’t define me…but they tell my story.

Have you struggled with stretch marks? Thoughts?

Great post. I sometimes think God leaves us with scars/consequences etc so that we can BETTER tell our story. Because if we are not open to telling it then how are we ultimately using our experiences for good? Ya know?

I have a few stretch marks on my upper thighs from gaining/loosing weight all my teen years and then from gaining weight back while in ED recovery. I love your outlook!! No more shame!

I lost a lot of weight a while back and hence am covered in stretch marks! I really like (and agree) with your perspective: they tell a story and hence should be embraced! More power to our inner warriors :) !
